Review the performance of the fund you wish to invest in. Look at the performance over a range of 3 to 5 years before taking the plunge.

ELSS comes with a lock-in of 3 years. *Investment up to 1.5 lakhs in ELSS is eligible for deduction from taxable income under Sec 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961. This implies that the Indian residents below the age of 60 years whose total income does not exceed 50 lakhs for FY 17-18. Tax savings may vary depending on the applicable tax slab. Investors are advised to consult his/her own Tax Consultant with respect to the specific amount of tax and other implications arising out of his/her participation in ELSS.

ELSS is a type of equity fund where in the money is invested in equities which hold wealth creation potential. ELSS has one of the lowest lock-in periods of 3 years compared to other tax saving options. Investments made up to Rs. 1.5 lakhs a year qualify for a tax exemption. You can save up to Rs. 46,350* in taxes.

You can invest any time. This is no right or wrong time to invest. You can start with an investment of Rs. 500 per month and there is no cap on the amount you invest. Tax benefits, however, are limited as per the 80C limit.
