An Inflation Calculator is an online tool that estimates how inflation affects the future value of your money or the amount needed to maintain your lifestyle. By inputting your current expenses, expected inflation rate, and time horizon, it shows the future cost of your goals and the investments required.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) measures inflation through the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks price changes of everyday items. The calculation examines a fixed basket of common goods and services, including dal, rice, vegetables, rent, transport, and clothing. These items receive different weightage based on household spending patterns.
To determine the CPI, economists compare the current cost of this fixed basket with its cost in a base year, then multiply the result by 100. So, the formula is;
CPI = (Cost of Fixed Basket in Current Year / Cost of Fixed Basket in Base Year) × 100.
For example, if a basket costs ₹500 today and costs ₹400 in the base year, the calculation would be (500/400)*100, giving a CPI of 125. The difference between the two periods' CPI values shows the inflation rate, indicating how prices have changed over time.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures inflation by tracking price changes in everyday items. This calculation helps identify how prices have shifted. When prices rise over time, purchasing power decreases, affecting household budgets and financial planning. The formula calculates the percentage change between two time periods:
Inflation = [(CPI x+1 – CPIx)/ CPIx)]*100
