What is an SIP Calculator?

A SIP calculator is a free online tool designed to estimate the future value of your investments made through a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) in mutual funds. By entering three basic details such as your monthly investment amount, expected rate of return, and investment period, the mutual fund calculator provides an estimated corpus at maturity.

A systematic investment calculator simplifies financial planning by helping investors understand how regular investments may accumulate over time. While it cannot guarantee actual returns, it offers a reasonable estimate based on assumed returns. Whether you are investing for retirement, a child's education, or wealth creation, an MF calculator enables you to compare different investment scenarios and select a SIP amount aligned with your financial goals.

How Can a SIP Return Calculator Help You?

A SIP investment return calculator helps investors plan their mutual fund investments more effectively by providing estimates of potential returns.

  • Estimates the future value of your monthly SIP investments.
  • Helps determine the ideal SIP amount required to achieve financial goals.
  • Allows comparison of different investment tenures and expected return rates.
  • Demonstrates the impact of compounding over longer investment horizons.
  • Supports better budgeting by showing how small, regular investments can grow.
  • Enables investors to modify investment amounts and instantly compare outcomes using a SIP calculator online.
  • Assists in planning for long-term goals such as retirement, education, or home ownership using a reliable SIP investment plan calculator.

How Do SIP Calculators Work?

A SIP return rate calculator uses the Future Value of an Annuity formula to estimate how regular investments may grow over time. It uses three main inputs: the investment amount, investment period, and expected annual return.

Required Inputs

  • Monthly Investment Amount (P): The fixed amount you plan to invest every month or at your chosen frequency.
  • Investment Duration (n): The total period, in years or months, for which you plan to invest.
  • Expected Rate of Return (r): The estimated annual percentage return you expect from the investment.

The Math and Compounding

  • Monthly Rate Conversion: The calculator divides the expected annual return by 12 to calculate the monthly rate (i = r / 12).
  • Total Installments: The number of years is multiplied by 12 to calculate the total number of monthly instalments (n × 12).
  • Compounding Effect: The calculator applies the formula. This accounts for the returns earned on each instalment during the period it remains invested.

Output Results

  • Total Invested Amount: The total of all the regular contributions made during the investment period.
  • Estimated Returns: The estimated wealth generated through compounding during the investment period, based on the rate of return selected by the investor and assumed for illustration purposes.
  • Total Corpus Value: The estimated final value of the investment, including the invested amount and estimated returns.

SIP Calculator Formula Explained

The SIP calculator formula estimates the future value of monthly investments based on the principles of compound growth.

Formula:

FV = P × {[(1 + i)n − 1] / i} × (1 + i)

Where:

  • FV = Future value of the investment
  • P = Monthly SIP investment
  • i = Monthly rate of return (Annual return ÷ 12)
  • n = Total number of monthly instalments

The formula assumes that each SIP instalment earns returns until the investment period ends. Since mutual fund returns are market-linked, the result is only an estimate and not a guaranteed maturity value.

SIP Growth Scenarios Example

Here's a comparison of expected annual returns and estimated corpus amounts that can be generated with different SIP amounts.

Monthly SIP Investment Period Expected Annual Return Total Investment Estimated Returns Estimated Corpus
₹2,000 10 Years 12% ₹2,40,000 ₹2,24,339 ₹4,64,339
₹5,000 15 Years 12% ₹9,00,000 ₹16,22,880 ₹25,22,880
₹10,000 20 Years 12% ₹24,00,000 ₹75,91,479 ₹99,91,479
₹20,000 25 Years 12% ₹60,00,000 ₹2,79,57,764 ₹3,39,57,764

Past performance may or may not be sustained in future. Please consult your financial advisor before investing. Different plans have different expense structure.

Note: These figures are illustrative and based on an assumed annual return of 12%. Actual mutual fund returns are market-linked and may differ.

SIP Frequency: Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Quarterly with Examples

SIP frequency refers to how often a fixed amount is automatically deducted from your bank account and invested in a mutual fund. The four common frequencies are daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly. They differ based on how often you invest and how the investment fits your cash flow.

Daily SIP

  • Investment interval: Every business day.
  • Best for: Investors who have regular cash availability and prefer frequent investing.
  • Example: You set up a daily auto-debit of ₹500. On each trading day, ₹500 is invested in your selected equity fund, resulting in around 20–22 transactions a month.

Weekly SIP

  • Investment interval: Once every week on a selected day, such as Monday or Wednesday.
  • Best for: Freelancers or small business owners who receive income every week.
  • Example: You invest ₹2,500 every Friday. Your account is debited four times a month, dividing your planned monthly investment into weekly amounts.

Monthly SIP

  • Investment interval: Once a month on a fixed date.
  • Best for: Salaried individuals, as it is one of the most commonly used SIP frequencies.
  • Example: You schedule an investment of ₹10,000 on the 5th of every month. This can match your salary cycle and help you save soon after receiving your salary.

Quarterly SIP

  • Investment interval: Once every three months.
  • Best for: People with seasonal income, agricultural earnings, or quarterly business profits.
  • Example: You invest ₹30,000 once every three months, such as in January, April, July, and October, instead of making smaller monthly investments.

  • Speed and Accuracy: Calculates compound interest quickly and reduces errors that can occur with manual calculations.
  • Goal-Based Planning: Helps you estimate how much you need to invest regularly for goals such as retirement or education.
  • Scenario Testing: Allows you to change the investment period or contribution amount and compare different outcomes.
  • Encourages Discipline: Showing how investments can grow over time may encourage regular saving and investing.
  • Sets Realistic Expectations: Provides projections based on historical or assumed return rates, helping you plan with estimates instead of guesswork.

Why SIPs in Mutual Funds Seem to Work

SIP in mutual fund tend to work due to following reasons:

  • No Market Timing Needed: You do not need to predict when market prices will be at their lowest. Regular investing reduces the need to predict market movements.
  • Rupee-Cost Averaging: When prices fall, your fixed investment amount buys more fund units. When prices rise, it buys fewer units. Over time, this can help reduce the average cost per unit.
  • Power of Compounding: Returns earned from mutual fund investments can generate further returns when they remain invested. Regular investments can grow significantly over longer periods.
  • Built-in Financial Discipline: Automatic bank debits encourage regular saving and investing. This can also help you continue investing during periods of negative market news.
  • Budget Friendly: Smaller regular investment amounts can make investing more accessible than arranging a large lump-sum amount.

Choosing the Right Mutual Fund Category for Your SIP

You can refer following table to choose the right mutual fund category for your SIP:

Mutual Fund Category Suitable For Typical Investment Horizon Risk Level
